Think We're Over the Hurdle

This week Nana and Papa seemed to get over the hurdle with training. We found our way back to the gym with the help of GPS...just kidding! Actually we did use the GPS app on the iPhone to learn that it's 1.3 miles via walking or bike to the gym.

We've started our 4.2 mile training for Pat's Run. The sobering news is our baseline is 1:06:00 or around there. Cutting that time down 16 minutes will be a challenge in the next 8 weeks. We get under 50 minutes and we're elated but if we get under 1:00, we will be happy with the time.

As far as the hike, we have all the reservations made. The reservation for the mule transport to/from Phantom Ranch for our overnight duffel is made. We have shuttle transportation to take us back to our car. Hotels, meals, etc. are done. It's a 10 day/9 night vacation that is the ultimate of luxury and the most primitive hiking. We'll also be visiting Zion National Park and visiting the grandson during that time. Perhaps those plans helped push us over the hurdle on the training!

Also this week we worked on the packing list pulling together suggestions of "needs" from several web sites/blogs. Now we have a few items to purchase and then the day pack to fill so we can start hiking with the extra weight to test. Additional resources, such as maps and trail guides, are also purchased so we can continue our mental preparation. We've learned that the mental preparation can be as valuable as the first.

Finally, Nana has achieved her first weight milestone loosing ten pounds. The food choices are easier now and both of us are making the lifestyle changes needed to get active and healthy. This week we're hoping for continuous progress on our training.
