Stop #10 is another university golf course, home to the Iowa Hawkeyes. We were able to add a ball marker to our memorial collection. To review, we picked up markers at the first three courses. Ok, the fourth course was actually mini golf on Mackinac Island, so no marker there. The other courses say “back order” or supplier issues are why they do not have them.
Back to Finkbine. Beautiful course with gentle rolling hills and, yes, more geese. The clubhouse and pro shop are beautiful. The restaurant and other amenities are named after Iowa coaches and athletic directors. Iowa people love their college sports!
Speaking of college sports, football is a big Iowa sport. One of the most endearing and recent Iowa traditions is the wave. At the end of the first quarter of home games, everyone in the stands and the Iowa players turn and wave to the children who are literally across the street in the children’s hospital. Even visiting teams are joining in the wave. This is so touching.
We have not been in Iowa City since the children’s hospital was constructed, well at least completed. The original massive University of Iowa hospital is close to the stadium, but a large circle drive provided some distance. I was surprised how close the new children’s hospital is to the narrow 4-lane street that separates it from Kinnick stadium! And the short crosswalk between the stadium and hospital is named “For The Kids Way.” How cool is that.
The video below is very rough. Hopefully it helps provide perspective on how close the football stadium is to the multiple story curved children’s hospital. Watch an Iowa game this fall and check out the first quarter wave.
