The magic continued as we left the Chicago area during morning rush hour. Fortunately we did not take freeways and we were going away from the city, so traffic was light. Within an hour we were seeing vast open fields and gentle rolling hills.
Our “tourist” destination for today was Galena, Illinois. This charming town has been a favorite spot for years. It was our closest snow skiing spot when we lived in eastern Iowa. There is a lovely resort just outside of town, and the old downtown is absolutely charming. There are so many delicious food places, and walking along the narrow, curvy Main Street transports you to a simpler time. Even though it isn’t a peak time for tourists, most of the shops were open. It was a fun day.
What I didn’t realize is Galena was Ulysses S. Grant's home. That, to me, is the beauty of a good road trip. We drove by the museum so I looked it up online. Or, another thing that struck me on this trip, is how real geography becomes. I knew Michigan bordered Canada but I didn’t realize how close Detroit was to Canada. Or that Indiana has 60+ miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Wonderful things to learn.
Following an enjoyable day walking in sunshine in Galena, we drove west across the Mississippi River on the Julien Dubuque Bridge into Dubuque, Iowa.
