Motor City

Last year was our first time visiting the state of Michigan. This year was our first time through Detroit. We didn’t have a lot of time to explore the city so there is way more we could see, and would like to.

On a whim, we stopped by the Motown Museum. This is the original site for Motown Records. We stepped into the museum and a security guard immediately greeted us. Tickets are required for guided tours and that was the only way to enter. The next available tour spots were too late in the day for our schedule, so no tour for us. We did enjoy all the black and white photos of MoTown artists filling the entry hall and a little time in the gift shop before departing.

Close by and staying with the MoTown theme, we explored the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater. It is located along the Detroit River in downtown Detroit. The river and downtown skyline make a nice backdrop for the stage. Early April doesn’t do justice in showcasing the the beauty of the area, I’m sure. I can only imagine how fun a summer night under the stars, with the city lights reflecting in the river, while listening to soulful music would be. It was also amazing to see several fishing boats on the river

Our afternoon and evening was absolutely delightful. We stayed overnight with former neighbors who moved back to their home base, closer to family. The gracious hospitality of friends Mike and Mary kept us talking, laughing and sharing stories for hours. We enjoyed a fresh perch and walleye dinner at a wonderful restaurant on the shore of Lake Saint Clair. As delicious as dinner was, it was equally satisfying getting a tour of childhood and family locations on the way to dinner. It is so enjoyable to learn about our friends’ lives and what makes them who they are today.

The downside is I was so consumed in the moment that all pictures escaped me. Their comfortable home, beautiful area and them. Shame on me.

Mary did snap this photo of our after-dinner dilemma. Seems Papa’s jacket zipper got stuck when fully zipped up, turning his warm jacket into a straight jacket. Several varied attempts to free him finally resulted in success when we joined forces. The winning combination was my hands on either side of the zipper pulling upward towards Papa’s face while Mike grabbed the zipper with a pliers and gave a strong downward tug.

After a comfortable night’s rest, they sent us off well-rested and fed to the destination which is the reason for this road trip. Tomorrow.
