Not What We Planned…Better

A few days after returning from California, we set out on road trip #2 for 2023. When we travel, I check weather, roads, etc. the night before…to try and avoid hiccups. Last night our route had flood warnings at a few points. Recalculating! That actually worked out well.

We have driven our first choice route so many times, so there wasn’t much new to stop and see. Plan B took us through the White Mountains. We have been through some of the areas, but definitely not all.

Arizona is known for its varied geography. Low desert and high mountain ranges are within a couple hours or less by car.  The state’s scenery is beautiful. We started with spring flowers (poppies, lupine, fairy dusters and Mexican daisies) lining the roadway. Around Globe, the scenery added more mountainous formations and we climbed in elevation. BetsyB (car) took a break along the scenic route as Papa and I admired the pine trees high on the mountain of rocks. Those pine trees became more numerous as we passed through a national forest.

The canyons were amazing. We could see the rapids way down below. We passed a sign near the bridge over those rapids earlier on the roadway that offered rafting. Just a couple hours to the east of where we live; no need to go all the way to northern Arizona and the Colorado River.

There were lots of switchbacks/curvy mountain roads. Unique geography that continued to evolve. The green hills covered in flowers turned to the tall mountains/deep canyons and then to yellow prairie grass. Off in the distance we saw snow-capped mountains.

Now we crossed into New Mexico. The scenery was still nice but a little more repetitive. Fortunately our attention was diverted as we listened to the Iowa Women in the NCAA basketball final on XM radio. A close game. Iowa fought hard but LSU came out on top. Iowa Hawkeyes had an amazing season.

Tomorrow…New Mexico and into Texas.
