Yesterday was Cadillac Ranch. Although we made a repeat stop at this Route 66 spot, we by-passed some others where we stopped before: the huge cross, leaning tower and Slug Bug Ranch.
We have previously stopped in Shamrock, Texas to visit the original ConocoPhillips station and the U Drop Inn. This little cafe was a hot spot during the Route 66 days. One of the most famous patrons was Elvis Presley. It was a favorite diner stop as he crossed the country from Memphis to Los Angeles and back. He even had a favorite booth, which is now dedicated in his memory.
We planned to have lunch here for the first time. Alas, it isn’t open on Sunday or Monday, and it was Monday. If we ever pass this way again, hopefully we will connect! And something new. We were surprised at the number of Tesla charging stations.
U Drop Inn was closed for a long period of time. Just a couple years ago, a young man re-opened this iconic Route 66 diner. See the local news story
