A few weeks ago, we watched a new program on The Magnolia Network called Motel Rescue. The first episode, Solvang Solve, featured The Viking Inn in Solvang, California. We heard about this community before from friends and relatives. It is known for its Dutch influence. It sounded like a fun stop on our road trip.
Solvang didn't disappoint. The windmills start outside the town limits. The Scandinavian influence extends for blocks and blocks. The mild weather and friendly shopkeepers were a definite draw. It was Friday and the town was filled with tourists walking the streets, enjoying meals on restaurant patios, and shopping. What a delightful break from driving.
Of course we had to stop in Olsen's Bakery. Now that's a good Dutch name, right? Buckets of cookies were stacked up high, ready for a quick grab-and-go. The counters were filled with the most mouth-watering baked goods. An adjoining gift shop had adorable trinkets. We did not escape the tourist trap. We bought a variety of cookies for the road.
Yes, we did see the featured motel, The Viking Inn. The parking lot was full and the "No Vacancy" sign illuminated. Apparently the renovation was successful. The outside looked very nice, although a bit changed from the television episode.
Solvang was great, but I admit, the ocean was still calling. We loaded our homemade mac-and-cheese in our little plug-in heater, and headed for one of my favorite California beaches, Ventura. Time for an evening picnic on the beach. More Saturday.
