Early in this marathon, we spent a day in Waco, Texas exploring the town and the Magnolia empire. From Texas to Maine, another fixer-upper type show Papa and I watch: Maine Cabin Masters. The two shows are almost on opposite ends of the "home improvement" spectrum. The MCM crew help people in the state of Maine renovate their cabins, or camps as they call them. They work hard and with minimal budgets to make very primitive structures into safe and comfortable cabins for families. They are true masters of reusing materials and finding economical ways to get projects accomplished.
Although we didn't see any of the crew nor their finished "camps," it was a great stop at their headquarters near Augusta, Maine. Of course the fall leaves and festive atmosphere made it special. It was nearly 80°, a picture-perfect autumn day. After a little shopping in their store, Papa and I had a picnic lunch at their Woodshed grill. Totally different world than we're accustomed to, yet welcoming and relaxing.
Also today, we made a stop at Low's Covered Bridge, near Guilford, Maine. And in Bangor, Papa feared Paul Bunyan would drop his ax on his head. And we definitely passed through areas near their peak of fall colors. It’s hard for pictures to capture the dramatic foliage we see.
There was a little mixed emotion today. We started the day almost 3,000 miles away from home near the Atlantic coast. It is good to be heading west yet that means we are heading to the end of the trip. It has been, and continues to be, a fantastic memorable adventure. And there are more dreams to come true.
