The last weekend before the half marathon. Yesterday we knew we had to test ourselves and yet we wanted to have some fun. No, can't say that training is what we consider fun.
We decided to go to a somewhat local festival. Instead of driving, we rode the train to the end of the line which was 6.1 miles from the event. We then walked the remainder of the way.
Knowing that we first needed to test our speed for the race, we decided to walk at a brisk but comfortable race for the first six miles to the event. Using on trusty phone app, we clocked our average speed at 16.5 miles an hour. We need to maintain at least 18 miles an hour to finish within the allotted race time.
Returning after spending a couple hours at the event, our goal was endurance. It was night and the temperatures were dropping. I have a harder time breathing in the colder, night air so it seemed wise to work on the endurance rather than breathing heavy with speed training. We made the six mile trip back to the train in just over two hours or averaging about 21 minutes per mile.
The endurance idea was good. We really worked the muscles and today we're a little tight after sitting. This week the muscles should heal and we'll be set for next Sunday. So far the weather for next Sunday looks perfect for race day.
