Cheyenne, Wyoming

Driving days. The past two days, we drove in/through four states: Iowa, Nebraska, southeast Wyoming and into Colorado. Today we started to see snow in the higher elevation of the Nebraska panhandle. Then the skies slowly cleared, and Wyoming was beautiful.

The fun on today’s leg of the trip was meals. We ate breakfast in Nebraska, lunch in Wyoming and dinner in Colorado. We have a plug-in portable oven to warm everything from frozen meals to leftovers. Today, with more miles to cover, it was a great way to use leftovers from last night’s dinner. We usually eat one meal at a local restaurant.

The tourist spot for today was Cheyenne. First stop was the Botanical Garden. We hoped they would honor our memberships from Arizona. No worries. Admission is free for everyone. What a wonderful service for the community!  It is a large, three-story building with plants and art on every floor. There are several rooms available on the perimeter, one was hosting a bridal shower today.

The ground floor of the environmental-controlled botanical garden features mostly tropical plants complete with a heavy misting system, two water features and a couple live turtles.

The top floor has access to an outside rooftop balcony. We ventured out on a cold, blustery day. Beautiful skies but there is still snow surviving in the shade of tables. Papa and I didn’t last long outside. Back inside, Papa especially liked the positive signage, reminding visitors to look and not touch.

We left the Garden to explore more of Cheyenne. Nearby is a large stadium/area in a western theme. It looks almost like fairgrounds and a sign touted an annual event. Given Cheyenne is the Capitol of Wyoming, that makes sense.

We drove around the Capitol and other state and federal buildings and into the downtown area before heading to Colorado. The route leaving crossed a large bridge over a railroad area and we wondered what that would be like in the snow. I wouldn’t want to try it!

We have been traveling for two weeks. The biggest weather factor has been wind. Two mornings we drove in rain showers for a couple hours, which gave BetsyB a nice shower/clean up. Rest of the time beautiful skies.

Snow. That’s on our mind. We are hoping to get Rocky Mountain high, literally like 11,000+ feet, in the next few days. We want snow around the road but definitely not on it. April. Mountains. We will see.
