Many, many years ago, our family member’s face lit up as he described a conference he attended at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. This memory trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop here. It did not disappoint!
The day starts with a ferry ride from the mainland to the island. No cars are allowed on the island. Bikes, horses and foot traffic are it. I’m getting ahead of myself. First, the ferry ride: the Mackinac Bridge, the harbor lighthouse, and first glimpse of the Grand Hotel.
The recommendation was to take a carriage tour of the island first to learn the highlights and where we wanted to explore. Fascinating history. The Arch Rock. Two churches: one with beautiful stained glass windows and another built with materials from the island. The Michigan governors summer home with beautiful flowers. Oh amazingly beautiful flowers everywhere!
The Grand Hotel has the most prolific, lush red geraniums topping the entire railing surrounding the large balcony. That incredibly long balcony is filled with rocking chairs, multiple seating options, and games enticing you to sit-and-relax. It is a vibrant social hub and welcoming environment with spectacular views of Lake Michigan. The red carpet beckons you to climb the stairs from your horse-drawn carriage to the grand doors of the Hotel.
The red and green colors of the geraniums and balcony are carried into the equally long and elegant lobby. And the furnishings are comfortable.
The fine details aren’t limited the Hotel itself. The grounds entice you to slow down and enjoy the moment. There are multiple yard games to enjoy in the large open green space at the foot of the Hotel. A huge chess board drew lots of attention. Our foursome was drawn to golf, of course. We played 18 holes and all of us shot in the 50s! Ok, it was miniature golf. The island does have a 18 hole golf course, too. Although golf carts are used ON the course, they are not allowed between the front and back nine. You have to take a horse-drawn carriage for that.
One of the highest viewpoints in the island is Fort Mackinac. The cannon firing and muskat demonstrations are LOUD.
The views from the Fort were spectacular. Walking down the streets seeing only bicycles and horses was a step back in time. The fudge is amazing! The food is delicious. It was a magical day.
